What a doula does
A doula is a trained birth companion. They don’t give medical care or replace your doctor or midwife. They help you prepare for the birth, support you and your birth partner during labour, and check in once the baby arrives.
How to choose a doula

- Ask what the package includes: meetings before the birth, being on call around your due date, the birth itself and visits afterwards.
- Check they can attend births at your hospital.
- Ask who covers for them if they can’t make it on the day.

Is a doula the same as a midwife?
No. A midwife is a medical professional who provides clinical care. A doula gives emotional and practical support and works alongside your medical team.
Can a doula support a caesarean birth?
Yes, doulas support planned and unplanned caesareans too. Ask your hospital whether a doula can join you in theatre.
