How to Get a Schengen Visa for Your Nanny from the UAE (2026 Guide)

How to Get a Schengen Visa for Your Nanny from the UAE (2026 Guide)

Last updated: April 2026. This guide has been fully revised to reflect current document requirements, sponsorship rules, and application centre information.

Planning a European holiday and want to bring your nanny along? You're not alone — it's one of the most common questions UAE families ask us at Yaya Middle East. Done right, it transforms your trip. Done wrong, a single missing document gets the application rejected outright.

This guide covers everything you need to know: what the Schengen visa allows, the exact documents required, how sponsorship type affects what you need to submit, and how the application process works in the UAE.

What Is a Schengen Visa?

A Schengen visa allows travel across 29 European countries for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Popular family destinations like Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Portugal, and the Netherlands are all included.

Important exceptions: The UK and Ireland are not part of the Schengen Area — they require separate visas with their own application processes.

A key rule that trips many families up: you must apply at the consulate of the country where you'll spend the majority of your time, not simply where you land. If you're splitting your trip between Greece and Italy and spending more nights in Greece, you apply through the Greek consulate. If the split is equal, apply at the country of first entry.

For more on Schengen rules, visit the European Union's official travel page.

Key Rules Before You Apply

  • Travelling with a family member is strongly recommended. Technically, EU Schengen rules do not require a domestic worker to travel alongside the family — but in practice, UAE check-in staff can and do question nannies travelling alone on a tourist visa, and this can cause issues at departure. Based on our experience, travelling together with at least one family member avoids unnecessary complications at the airport.
  • The visa is for tourism purposes — your nanny is there to care for your children as part of your family holiday. She cannot use this visa to work for any third party or take on independent employment in Europe.
  • A single missing document can result in outright rejection with no refund of fees
  • Applications cannot be submitted more than 6 months before the travel date

Understanding Visa Entry History: What to Expect Over Time

One thing most guides don't explain is how Schengen visa validity tends to improve with a clean travel history. Here's the general pattern, though the final decision is always at the consulate's discretion:

  • First application: Single-entry visa, valid for your exact travel dates only
  • Second application (after a successful first trip with no overstays): Often a 2–3 month multiple-entry visa
  • Third application onwards: Potentially a 6-month or even multi-year multiple-entry visa

This means the first trip is the most document-intensive. Getting it right matters — not just for this holiday, but for building a stronger visa history for future trips.

Document Checklist for Your Nanny's Schengen Visa

Your Nanny Needs to Provide:

  • Completed visa application form — must be filled out online and signed; handwritten forms are not accepted
  • Valid passport — must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure from the Schengen Area, contain at least 2 consecutive blank pages, and have been issued within the previous 10 years. Include photocopies of the data page, UAE residence visa, and any previous Schengen visas.
  • One recent passport photograph — taken within the last 6 months, size 3.5cm × 4cm, white background, full face clearly visible with no head coverings
  • Travel medical insurance certificate — must cover the entire period of stay, be valid across all Schengen states, and provide a minimum of €30,000 coverage including emergency medical treatment, hospitalisation, and repatriation. Insurance card copies are not accepted — you must submit the full certificate. You can get Schengen-compliant travel insurance for your nanny at europe-insurance.eu.
  • Return flight reservation — must match exactly what is listed on the application form
  • Proof of accommodation — hotel reservation, rental agreement, or proof of property ownership in the destination country
  • Full travel itinerary — a day-by-day plan of the trip
  • Cover letter — explaining the purpose of the trip, who is travelling, and the dates

The Family Must Also Provide — Proof of Financial Means:

The consulate needs to be satisfied that the family can financially support the trip. You can provide one or more of the following:

  • 3 months of bank statements — must be originally stamped in person at the bank. Internet printouts and online extracts are rejected outright.
  • ✅ Payslips
  • ✅ A valid international credit card accompanied by bank statements

Sponsorship Type: This Changes What You Need to Submit

This is the section most families get wrong. The documents required depend on whether your nanny's UAE residence visa is held by an agency or by your family directly.

Scenario A: Nanny is sponsored by an agency (e.g. Maids.cc, or similar)

You need a No Objection Letter (NOC) from the agency confirming they have no objection to her travelling. The NOC should include her employment details, travel dates, and purpose of travel, and must carry an original signature and stamp from the agency.

Scenario B: Nanny is on private sponsorship (your family holds her visa)

You need to provide your own employer's documentation to prove your financial standing:

  • An original letter from your employer confirming your employment status, position, salary, and contract length
  • A copy of your employer's company trade license — this is mandatory

In both scenarios, the family must still separately provide proof of financial means (bank statements, payslips, or credit card statements) as detailed above.

The Application Process: Step by Step

Step 1: Book Your Appointment

This is the step most families underestimate. Appointment slots — especially for popular summer destinations — fill up weeks in advance. During peak season (May–August), you should start this process 8–10 weeks before your travel date.

Most Schengen countries in the UAE process applications through VFS Global, which operates application centres in Dubai (Wafi Mall) and Abu Dhabi (World Trade Centre Mall). However, not all countries use VFS Global:

  • VFS Global handles applications for: Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Greece, Portugal, Austria, Hungary, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Denmark, and others
  • France uses TLScontact — not VFS Global. Submitting your French visa application at VFS will result in it being rejected. Always confirm the correct centre for your destination country before booking.

Note: Appointment availability varies by country and changes frequently — some popular destinations have experienced limited slots during peak periods. Always check current availability directly at visa.vfsglobal.com before making any travel plans.

Step 2: Gather All Documents

Use the checklist above and confirm requirements with the specific consulate for your destination country, as requirements can vary. All documentation must be in English (requirements may differ by country — confirm before submitting).

Step 3: Submit and Pay

Attend your appointment in person. Both the family member and the nanny may need to attend, depending on the consulate. Biometric data (fingerprints and photograph) will be collected.

Fees: The standard Schengen visa fee is €90 per application. On top of this, VFS Global charges a service fee. If you opt for VIP/premium lounge processing, budget approximately 1,100 AED in total at the time of writing. All fees are non-refundable regardless of outcome.

Step 4: Processing and Collection

Standard processing is 15 calendar days from the date of submission, though this can extend to 30–45 days during peak season (May–August). In practice, some consulates process significantly faster — for Greece, we have personally seen approvals come through in under 5 days. That said, do not plan around a fast turnaround. Submit early and treat any quick processing as a welcome surprise, not a guarantee.

You will receive a reference number at submission to track your application status online.

Tips for a Successful Application

  • Start 8–10 weeks early for summer travel — do not wait until 3 weeks before
  • Get bank statements stamped in person — do not attempt to submit online printouts
  • Confirm the correct application centre for your destination country before booking
  • Ensure the flight reservation matches the application form exactly — any discrepancy can cause rejection
  • Submit the insurance certificate, not just the insurance card
  • Discuss the process with your nanny — she needs to understand her obligations and the visa conditions, particularly that it is tourist-only
  • Keep copies of everything you submit

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my nanny travel to Europe without me?

No. She must travel with at least one family member. The Schengen tourist visa for a domestic worker is conditional on this.

Will she be allowed to work while in Europe?

She is there to care for your children as part of your family holiday — that is entirely the point. What the visa does not permit is working for any third party or taking on independent employment in Europe outside of her role with your family.

What if my nanny has never had a Schengen visa before?

First-time applicants can absolutely get approved — it will likely be a single-entry visa for exact travel dates. A clean application with complete documentation gives the best chance. Build travel history from there.

Does the UK count as a Schengen country?

No. The UK and Ireland both require separate visas through their own application processes.

What is TLScontact?

TLScontact is a visa application service provider used by France (and some other countries) as an alternative to VFS Global. If you are travelling to France, you must book through TLScontact UAE, not VFS.
